"Windows and Window Repair"
Windows are the eyes to the soul of a house. Your Arts and Crafts house was built with windows sized and massed appropriately for the bungalow style. DO NOT REPLACE THEM! They can work well again! There will be two workshops on the subject of windows and window repair.
"Repairing Wood Sash Windows"
We are pleased that Amy McAuley of Oculus Fine Carpentry will present a hands-on workshop on repairing wood sash windows. The Portland Bungalow Show has received a full sized (30x60) double hung wood window from The ReBuilding Center to use as a demonstration model for the window workshops. You will learn the parts of the window, how to take it apart and make it functional again.
"Repairing Outside of the Window"
As this winter proved, storm windows are a necessity. We had snow blowing in where I didn't even know cracks existed. Our second window workshop will cover the outside of the window. Even back in the 20's it was recognized that windows work better when they have a storm sash in the winter, and screens in the summer. One of the defining insulating qualities of windows is that the bigger the distance between window panes, the better the insulative value. While a good double pane window can give you 1/2", a standard doublehung sash and a storm window can give you 2-3". Fred Siebenmann, Director of the Portland Bungalow Show, bungalow enthusiast, and handyman will show how to make and hang a storm window, and a screen for a standard double hung window. To show that this is a task easily managed by most homeowners, he will make the storm sash and screen with a seventy year old table saw and a screwgun. A cut sheet, list of parts and price list will be available. Earplugs will be provided! Come and join us, it will be loud, but fun!
